International Organization for Standardization

Sometimes mistakenly referred to as the International Standards Organization, and commonly referred to as ISO, which is not an abbreviation but a derivation of the Greek word isos, which means equal and which is a term that was adopted by the International Organization for Standardization. An international standards-making body, based in Geneva, with representatives from more than 100 countries. The ISO establishes global standards for communications and information exchange. ANSI is the U.S. member of the ISO.

The seven-layer OSI Reference Model for computer-to-computer communications is one of the ISO's most widely accepted recommendations in the area of networking.
