Abbreviated LAP-B. A common CCITT bit-oriented, data-link layer protocol used to link terminals and computers to packet-switched networks. It is equivalent to the HDLC (High-level Data Link Control) asynchronous balanced mode, in which a station can start a transmission without receiving permission from a control station.
