One of the world's largest computer manufacturers, Compaq recently acquired the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), which boosted the company into the top three along with IBM and Hewlett-Packard.
By acquiring DEC, Compaq gained a world-wide service and support structure, as well as access to DEC's highly regarded hardware and software products.
Compaq also shook up the computer industry when it introduced the first PC that cost less than $1,000.
