The process of reorganizing and rewriting files so that they occupy one large area on a hard disk rather than several smaller areas.
When a file on a hard disk is updated, it may be written into different areas all over the disk. This outcome is particularly likely when the hard disk is continuously updated over a long period of time. This file fragmentation can lead to significant delays in loading files, but its effect can be reversed by defragmentation.
