Parks and Recreation

Coffey County can provide fishing fun for the entire family. Boat ramps are provided at each lake, with camping available at John Redmond, Gridley and Lebo Lakes. Coffey County Lakes

  • All lakes require state fishing licenses, in addition to local licenses and permits.
  • City licenses may be purchased at respective city halls and local vendors where state licenses are sold.
  • Creel and length limits may vary. Please check with local offices for more information.
  • Please check with lake officials on use of motorized boats, swimming, parking and other lake regulations.

Coffey County Lake - 5,090 acres, 2 miles north and 1 mile east of Burlington. Formerly Wolf Creek Lake, has proven to be one of the premier fishing lakes in the country. Dedicated exclusively to fishing, Coffey County Lake has been featured on national television programs such as Jimmy Houston’s Outdoors and Bill Saiff’s Rod and Reel.

Fishing Coffey Co. Lake Coffey County Lake offers one of the best predator to prey ratios in the country, which means fish thrive year long. Largemouth bass and crappie can often be hooked near areas of standing timber. The open waters are home to white bass and wipers. Along the rock-lined shores you’re likely to find walleye, channel catfish, and probably the best supply of smallmouth bass anywhere in the Midwest. Coffey County Lake Status:  OPEN

New Strawn Lake - 3 acres located in the center of the city of New Strawn. A city license is required. There is a special trout season at the New Strawn Lake from January 1 through May 1.

Gridley Lake - 33 acres, 1 mile north of Gridley. A city license is required.

Lebo Lake - 70 acres, 2 miles west and ½ mile north of Lebo. A city license is required.

John Redmond Reservoir - 9,400 acres, 2 miles north and ½ mile west of Burlington. John Redmond Reservoir offers a variety of the finest in water recreation, including boating, fishing and other water sports. John Redmond Reservior, along with other lakes, ponds, rivers and streams located in Coffey County, creates thousands of acres of water to play in, and around. If you feel like “getting back to nature”John Redmond offers three full service camping areas to pitch your tent, or park your RV. These sites include picnic tables, cookers, sanitation facilities, parking and much more. Whether you spend a night, a week, or just a leisurely afternoon, your visits will always be enjoyable. Coffey County is home to 291 kinds of birds, spanning 88 species. A bird-watching blind is available at the John Redmond Reservoir East Camping area, and various groups and organizations have been formed for serious bird-watchers.

Wolf Creek Environmental Education AreaWolf Creek Environmental Education Area - Provides an excellent opportunity to experience and learn about the nature of eastern Kansas. This area is a place to relax and take the time to notice the characteristics and interactions of plants and animals. The Area is open from dawn to dusk, year-round. The area also consists of 5 trails which guide you thorough a wide variety of Kansas habitats. Wildlife variety and abundance is high at the Environmental Education Area. Viewing opportunities for bald eagle and osprey are just two examples. A bald eagle pair has successfully nested at the lake since 1994. Osprey have been released at the Environmental Education Area since 1996 in an attempt to establish a nesting population. This is a program of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Western Resources and Wolf Creek employees. Kelley Park - Enjoy the playground and gazebo. The 4-H Building and Kelley Hall are available at this site for a fee. Contact Burlington City Hall for more information 620-364-5334.

LeRoy Park - Nested in the heart of LeRoy is a wonderful park. The perfect place for a group picnic.

Outdoor Pool - Located in Burlington, is an olympic sized pool with a huge water slide. This is a great way to take a break from the heat.
