Well Child Services
- Immunizations

The Coffey County Health Department strives to achieve 100% vaccination rates for resident children by following the recommended immunization schedule approved by CDC. Vaccines are received from the State of Kansas and assure that nonpayment or the inability to pay will not be a barrier to any child under age 19.
- KanBeHealthy Exams
Children whose insurance is covered by Healthwave, Children’s Mercy, Unicare, and Medicaid are required to have regular physicals, and doing so will provide for increased coverage of office visits and medication.
- KanBeHealthy exams are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and usually take one hour to complete.

- Healthy Start Visits to Newborns in the Home
Healthy Start visits are made to new and expecting parents to help them in preparing for parenthood as well as offering a listening ear after baby’s arrival. The program offers resource location, educational materials, and gifts for the new or expanding family.

- WIC
WIC is provided through the Lyon County Health Department with monthly sites in Burlington in the Courthouse basement, to schedule an appointment call (620) 342-4864 ext. 250.
- School Nursing for USD #243 and USD #245
- Oral Health
- Dental exams performed by nursing staff include basic assessments, referral and application of fluoride dental varnish.
- What is fluoride dental varnish? Fluoride varnish is a fluoride treatment that is applied to teeth with a paintbrush after teeth have been wiped with gauze. It comes in a variety of flavors and can help re-mineralize teeth, preventing and reversing decay.

- What is an STD test? We can perform STD exams on males by obtaining a urine specimen and sending it to a lab. The test will check for Gonorrhea & Chalmydia, which can be treated with medication we have on hand.
- A urine STD exam costs $10
- Treatment is provided for free through funding from KDHE
- Paternity testing - For $30 we can administer paternity tests if clients provide test kits.

- Affordable condoms, birth control pills, and Depo-provera shots
- Women's Health Clinic held monthly for paps, pelvics, and breast exams & physicals
- Federal Family Planning funding allows us to provide birth control pills and Depo-provera with yearly pap exams
- Birth control costs range from $0 - $10 per pack depending on income and family size; Depo shots are $0 - $40

- Investigate and monitor conditions contributing to morbidity and mortality in Coffey County.
Child Care Licensing
- Licensing and registration of day care homes and preschools throughout Coffey County.

Health Promotion and Education
The Health Department offers health promotion and education for families, schools and community groups on public health issues (calendar)
- Bloodborne Pathogen education
- Exciting & interactional presentations on bloodborne pathogens (Hepatitis & HIV) to assist your worksite to meet OSHA-required trainings. This service does not require a charge, however, donations are accepted.
- Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic
- Held every year in coordination with the Hospital, EMS, Sheriff, Police Department and regional partners.

- Community Health Fair Blood Draws
- Blood draws for the entire community are scheduled in the fall to provide a screening baseline and comparison for CBC, lipid profile, Chem profile, TSH, and PSA for an additional charge
- Strong Kids
- The Strong Kids Program is offered to children who have a BMI greater than the 95th percentile. It is modeled after the “Trim Kids” program from the YMCA. At least one parent and their child attend 12 weekly classes together. The goal of the class is to foster behavioral and lifestyle changes that will help them make healthy life choices in regard to diet and physical activity. Classes will resume in winter.
- Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program
- This program was co-developed by the Arthritis Foundation and the YMCA. The Aquatic Program is a recreational exercise program designed to accommodate the abilities of individuals with arthritis and other related diseases. These programs are taught in a group setting with activities and exercises to encourage self care, provide social interaction, improve muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, maintain independence, manage pain, and relive symptoms of arthritis. Classes include exercise and education to focus on wellness and a healthy lifestyle for the whole person, not merely the symptoms of arthritis. Classes are held twice a week for an hour at the Burlington Recreation Center indoor pool for 12 weeks in the fall and 12 weeks in the winter.
- 2009 Schedule
- The Health Department will be conducting the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program at the Burlington Recreation Center every Monday and Thursday from 2-3 p.m. starting September 21st and ending November 23rd. There is a $30 charge, made payable to the Burlington Recreation Center. Please register with the Burlington Recreation Department at 620-364-8484.
- Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
- Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is a recreational exercise program designed for anyone with arthritis or related rheumatic disease or musculoskeletal conditions. The program has many benefits for the individual including physical, social, and emotional. Classes are held twice each week for an hour for 6-8 weeks several times throughout the year.
- 2009 Schedule
- The Health Department will be conducting the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program at the LeRoy Library every Monday and Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. starting September 14th and ending November 9th. There is a $10 charge.
- Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation
- Tai Chi is a type of Chinese martial art but its movements are generally “softer,” more graceful and circular, relaxed and slow in temp. Breathing is deepened and slowed, aiding visual and mental concentration. Tai Chi classes have many benefits such as promotion of relaxation, improvement in balance, flexibility, and sleep, as well as helping with pain management.
Leadership in the Community
- Coffey County Health Department, through their involvement in the Coffey County Interagency Council and the Coffey County Wellness Committee, takes a leadership role in the provision and assessment of health services in Coffey County.
- Interagency meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the hospital meeting rooms at noon in all months except: June, July and December
- Partners 4 Change - (formerly known as the Coffey County Wellness Committee) meets regularly to discuss improving the behaviors among Coffey County Youth.
