Coffey County LakeIn June of 1998, Coffey County assumed responsibility for managing public use of the Wolf Creek Generating Station's cooling lake, changing the name to Coffey County Lake. At that time the Sheriff's Office assumed responsibility of the day to day operations of the lake. The lake is open for public use everyday except Thanksgiving and Christmas. During Central Standard Time, hours will be from 07:30 A.M until 3:30 P.M. After checking in, boats may begin launching on the Lake no earlier that ½ hour after sunrise. The Lake may stay open later if boats are on the water or there are bank fishermen. Everyone must be off the Lake and begin checking out 1 hour before sunset. During Daylight Saving Time, check in starts at sunrise and boats may begin launching on the Lake ½ hour after sunrise. Everyone must be off the Lake and begin checking out 1 hour before sunset. At no time of year will boats be checked in for access to the Lake after two hours before sunset. If there is no one fishing (Lake or bank) one hour prior to sunset, the Lake will be closed. All hours are subject to specific weather conditions which may preclude the lake being open. The lake may also be closed after opening if specific weather conditions arise. To access this information call (620) 364-2475. If you are planning to visit the lake, call for lake status before coming. All federal statutes, state statutes and county resolutions are enforced. It is required that all persons while on the lake wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. All violations will result in receiving a Notice to Appear in Coffey County District Court. Zebra mussels have been found in some of the lakes and waterways in the state of Kansas. A zebra mussel infestation poses a threat to industry, agriculture, and municipal water supplies. Due to the threat of zebra mussels, a zebra mussel watch is in effect at Coffey County Lake.
Things you can do to prevent or at least slow down the spread of zebra mussels are:
If you discover zebra mussels, note the date and precise location where they were found. Take one or more mussels with you and store them in rubbing alcohol. Do not throw them back in the water.
