Officer candidates must also meet all requirements for attendance at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Candidates for some positions are required to undergo testing to determine who will receive an interview. Some positions may require the taking of a psychological test during the hiring process. All final applicants must pass a County required drug screen before receiving a firm job offer. After hiring, a new employee is given a County physical. The initial pay step, if not the first step, is determined by prior experience, prior County employment, etc. Coffey County uses a six step pay scale, and newly hired applicants start 25¢ below their initial step for the first six month initial period in position.. This period may be extended if necessary. Step increases are both performance based and time-in-step based. Employees must satisfy both time-in-step and performance requirements to advance to the next step. County Employees belong to KPERS after their first year of employment unless they are KPERS members when hired. Full time Employees receive full benefits and part-time Employees receive benefits pro-rated by the number of days they normally work. Temporary Employees receive no paid benefits. The County provides health insurance to each Employee and has a family plan available for purchase. There is also an optional Plan-25 Cafeteria system available for pre-tax wage reduction as well as dental, vision, life and other packages that can be purchased. Applications are kept on file for one year from receipt. Applicants who have tested for a specific position within the last 6 months will use the last score tested. From 6 months to one year, it is optional with the applicant if they want to re-test or not. Over one year from the last test, the applicant must re-test. To receive an application or get other information phone (620) 364-2123 or contact Application for Employment in Adobe PDF format. Download and print out the application.
