Bulletin Board: Message from the Sheriff

In March 1992 President Bush issued the first proclamation formalizing National Telecommunications week. Later the title was changed to Telecommunicators Week to recognize the men and women in the industry, not the industry itself.

It is recognized every year starting the second week of April lasting one full week.

Telecommunicators/Dispatchers perform a vital service to the community. Though job descriptions vary from place to place, it can be said of all Telecommunicators/Dispatchers that our job is to serve...

  1. The Community - to answer their call for help,
  2. Professional Responders on the street - to keep them safe.

The Coffey County Sheriff's Dispatchers answer calls for 911 emergency assistance and sheriff's administrative lines. We dispatch Sheriff's Deputies, Emergency Medical Services, and Coffey County Fire District #1 (all stations). Other agencies with the ability to communicate and to whom we dispatch for are; Burlington Police Department, Le Roy Police Department, Lebo Police Department, Waverly Police Department, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Corps of Engineers (JRR), and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

  1. State updated Computer system that the Law Enforcement community interfaces with,
  2. Computerized vehicle tracking systems,
  3. Radio console and enhanced 911

Reminders on the uses of 9-1-1

  • Never program 911 into the memory of your phone, its probably the one number you will not forget.
  • 911 should only be used for life threatening emergencies, when seconds count.
  • Never hang up once you have dialed 911, our policy is to call back, if we cannot verify to our satisfaction, an officer will go to the address.
  • Mobil or Cell phone users should know their phone numbers.
