911 System

911 saves lives. When you are faced with an emergency, time plays a very important part in the outcome. That's why you should always use 911 when you need emergency help from Law Enforcement, Fire, an Ambulance, or possibly all three. Even the smallest child can be taught to use 911.

911 is a 24-hour number and is accessible from any working phone, and it is toll free.

Coffey County Communications Center is equipped with the Kansas Statewide Hosted Solution 911 system, also known as Next Generation 911 (NG911). The system is comprised of Emergency Services IP networks (ESInets), IP-based Software Services and Applications, Databases and Data Management processes that are interconnected to the Communication Center's premise equipment. In most cases we are able to confirm the 911 caller location and personal information, but the dispatcher will need to confirm specific information as well, to ensure that we respond with the help you need.

Today's 911 system is state of the art and is required to conform to certain state statutes. Partial funding is received through telephone providers of landline (home phones) and cellular providers.

Benefits of the NG911 system include:

  • Enhanced mapping software to show exact location of the phone being used to dial 911

911 should be used to report:

  • Automobile accidents
  • Assaults
  • Robberies/burglaries
  • Fires/odors of gas
  • Medical emergencies
  • Crimes in progress
  • Suspicious activity
  • Abandoned Vehicles

911 should not be used to report:

  • Ask about weather/road conditions
  • Operator assistance
  • Cattle out
  • Dogs complaints
  • Non-emergency calls for service
  • Administrative assistance

A good rule of thumb is, if you need immediate response (lights and siren), call 911!
