Coffey County Lake, which provides cooling water for Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station, is known in fishing circuits as a prime spot for big catches. The warm, circulating waters create an environment that both amateur and professional fishermen enjoy with much success.
For smaller lakes (but not smaller fish), check out one of the city lakes in the county located in Lebo, New Strawn, and Gridley (Lebo even features a special pond for youth fishing). Fishing the Neosho River at the Burlington City Dam is just one of the reasons why Burlington was once billed the "Catfish Capital of the World".
Finally, the largest fishing lake is John Redmond Reservoir, located just to the west of Coffey County Lake.
